Were you on one ticket XXX-ATL-LHR-EDI? Or did you purchase a separate ticket to ATL?
It may not be BA at fault here but rather AA or ATL handling.
Perhaps you should never fly through ATL again rather than never flying BA. ATL is not an AA hub, and you could have done a 1 stop routing via LHR since all the cities AA flies to ATL from have direct services on AA/BA to LHR.
