Per the wiki on this thread your son should be eligible for free SDC as long as they are in the same PNR.
The problem is United.com makes no mention of non-elite companions in their FAQ about SDC. So United.com is unclear on whether this is allowed or not but by leaving this statement out on the website you should assume that free SDC is not offered for PNR companions who are not Gold or above.

We are on the same PNR did not split at checkin as the flight in F was full. Thought I would look for options but the app is nt showing any options. Better yet.. When selectiing "more options" it bring me to a page with both of our names to check in, I select both name and it says reservation as already checked in (as I did that online) no other options.. I know the space is there just the app is not working and Web support said no.. Oh well.. I may check back with them later. I miss the App functionality for this but with a general on the same PNR it's not working..
