You may want to consider a side trip to Cambodia's Siem Reap (Ankor Wat). I've visited Thailand many times, and lived in Bangkok for over a year straight.
Once I finally went to Siem Reap, I wished I'd have taken the time to go before! It's absolutely BEAUTIFUL. The Cambodian border (not beautiful) is only a 4-5 hour bus from Bangkok's MorChit bus station, then another 3-4 hours from there to Siem Reap. As long as you cross the border before 5pm closing, you'll get to Siem Reap. The border has big casinos. Or you can fly. Buy your air tickets at a BKK travel agent (probably best).
