Half-day trip from Tokyo to Kamakura
After doing some research, my wife and I decided to head to Kamakura. This is a small, cute, old Japanese type of a town.
It's a 1 hour train ride on the JR line.
When you get off the train, there are small 1 lane cobblestone streets with a variety of stores. Very 1950's.
There are 2 things to see in town. One is north of town (about a 15 minute walk); and the other a short train ride away as you head south.
Details:
After getting off the train, there is another train adjacent to the station (it only goes one way... South). You take that a few stops to HASE. From there, it's a short walk to a very impressive 37' Buddah. You can overlook the sea from this area.
Once you're back in town, walk north about 15 minutes to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Nice gardens there.
You need a minimum of 2 hous in Kamakura. Of course if you'd like to eat and shop and enjoy the place, I suggest 3-4 hours in town.
Since we did this as a half day trip, we were rushed.
