@110pgl: "Mandarin" refers to a spoken dialect, "Chinese" is the term to use when discussing the written language.
I disagree with having note cards. It cannot hurt and may help you in a pinch. (Others have reported having problems even at the hotel.)
You are right the written language is not called Mandarin. I should have said Chinese/Standard Chinese/Hanzi or Han.
