Old rooms at the Connaught are a mixed bag. New section rooms generally better. But it is correct that experiences vary depending on what section you hit.
You can ask in advance what area you want and I've found they will honour it. We had a period of about a year where we always asked to stay in the contemporary wing, as their standard rooms are much nicer, but once you get onto suites then I prefer the original part of the hotel.
