I had a different experience last week. I have an award ticket coming up on the AF A380 via SFO (CDG-SFO-SEA). A schedule change took the connection at SFO down from close 3 hours down to 2 hours so I called and asked to be switched to a longer layover. It took the agent a few minutes going through the int'l reiussue desk but they were able to do it while preserving my seats in J on the AF A380. So it can be done, especially if there was a schedule change (and my schedule change didn't meet the minimum change that would drive a "free" change, but they did it anyway).
