One thing I did years ago was to go up to the Semmering Pass and Semmering village in the mountains, easily and cheaply reached by train. I remember it being really cheap to eat and sleep up there. It was lovely and cool too, as it was in the Summer.

Another pretty weird place to go is the Neusiedler See, a huge strange lake straddling the Hungarian border. It is so shallow you could really walk across it! Some pretty nice wines from down that way too.
