Totally agree with pinniped about allowing 2 hours for EWR, and, frankly, I would probably do 3. I used to cut things very close, and have a lot of colleagues who still do. But at some point, I realized that stressing about traffic, standing in long lines to check a bag or go through security, occasionally missing a plane, and at least running through the airport and then boarding last and having to check my carryon, were some of the main reasons I thought air travel was so awful. And I was doing more and more of it. So I changed how I approach things and now allow plenty of time. Around the same time, I also started learning about different ways to get lounge access (which means that extra waiting time can be much more pleasant and productive), started figuring out how to get reasonable upgrades - which definitely means shorter premier lines just about anywhere - and got precheck and global entry and the like. It is amazing how different the flying experience can be with a little knowledge and planning.
