Why do people make a distinction between a reward flight, discounted or full fare?

Ok title doesn't really say everything, but I find it curious that (some) people seem to think it makes a difference to the service you get/receive depending on if you are on a reward, discounted or full fare ticket.

Why do we think that is? Is it because we are British we expect there to be a trade off in service or quality because something is discounted?
