As the US has many foreign tourists who do not speak English, it is customary for CBP to have someone on duty who can speak foreign languages. I have reentered the US in LAX, ATL, and DTW; and all three locations, I have heard requests over the PA system or radios for someone who spoke such and such language including Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Tagalog, French, and even Italian.

BTW, the OP said she spoke limited English, not that she spoke NO English.
