I've had good luck with UA at non hub locations and at EWR (which may confound some) but not at ORD nor SFO. I find the people realize that opening up seats on later flights allows for easier irrops incase of mechanical or weather issues arise. At HUBs there is way more traffic coming through and if a high level of people want to switch flights it means more work and more possible screw ups.
