There's no single right answer.

If you work on a trading desk in finance, you might get e-mails or IMs that you're expected to answer within seconds or a couple minutes at most.

In my job, it depends on what the client wants. If it's something I can answer very quickly, it's reasonable to expect a response quickly. But if somebody e-mails me asking for something complicated, it might take a few hours to get back.

Not to mention the fact I travel quite a bit and don't always have e-mail access when doing so.

If something is truly urgent, I generally expect people to phone me.
