Many people don't find it "cost prohibitive". Airlines make billions in fees, and I'd suspect hundreds of millions of those are for "earlier flight" fees. Unless the later flight goes out full with pax standing by, it costs them nothing to have you wait around and they get quite a bit of revenue charging for it.
