Some airlines, especially USA legacy carriers, have some version of same day confirmed and same day standby policies that allow free changes under certain conditions, often for elites with a small fee for others. Foreign carriers generally don't allow this unless there are IROPs. For example, AF recently would have charged me about five hundred dollars to take an intraEU flight that was several hours earlier.
