As SANspotter said, it's to make it clear to your that the ticket you bought is for the flight you're on. If you want to change it, you'll have to pay extra. If they didn't do this, you'd always be buying the cheapest (restricted) tickets in the expectation of using them as more expensive (flexible) tickets. Thus, airline revenues go down.
