I use ATM's to get local currency in any place that has ATM's. The fees charged are always less than the commissions charged, and the exchange rate is generally better also.

Tipping in Australia is only expected from American visitors. Locals rarely tip except for majorly extraordinary service, save perhaps rounding the taxi fare up to the nearest dollar or a small percentage (again rounding up to a whole dollar) on a food bill.

Ask an Ausie what to tip and they will likely turn to you and say "Brush your teeth and always be good to your monther".

Yes we have $1 and $2 coins. But with the current exchange rate, our Pacific Pecos are worth about a quarter anyway! At least we saw the sense in disposing of the schrapnel, and now the 5c is the smallest coin.

Pull out a US dollar and you will be shown to the nearest Monopoly game. At least our notes are pretty colours, different sizes, and easily laundered (well, they are water-proof and washable) .
