Recently flew J from ICN to SFO. At some point during the flight, I fired up my iPad to check out if the movie choices were any different on the PDE. Obviously, had to join United wifi and was surprised to find that during a seatbelt announcement, the movie paused with a notification that a announcement was being made. Annoyed I couldn't get around the pausing with my own device, but even more impressed that they found a way to pause PDE via the wifi network.
From a technical perspective, don't think this would be difficult to implement at all. Content for PDE is all stored on an on-board server, so having the announcements pause he content coming off that local server should be pretty simple.
