I am a big Wharton and Dickinson fan, so your trip sounds terrific. I was at the Mount last year and thought it was terrific. You can book ahead for a fee and have a private tour with time in her personal library, with the curator showing you her books, if you are interested.
I have stayed at both, multiple times at Blantyre, it's one of my favorite places in the world. I actually went to Dickinson's school and had the opportunities to visit Berkshires quite often
I completely agreed with Groombridge's comments on Wheatleigh. The staffs were snobbish, service not personable, several mistakes made with no apology, and there are so many great restaurants in Boston that serve much much better food than at Wheatleigh. I think it's a beautiful property though, but definitely one of the most overpriced experiences.
