When I am in a bulkhead seat (most of the time) and NEED to put my backpack in the overhead and want it over my head I will line up early. Otherwise I don't need to. And I consider myself a very experienced traveler so your statement about minimally experienced traveler is off the mark in some cases. You can't generalize a statement and have it fit all situations.
