I've always been able to get scalp tickets in Montreal, even for the very-very most desirable hockey games (e.g., Canada-USSR I).

Also, find out if standing-room tickets are sold for the Bell Centre. They used to be sold for the Forum and were an excellent alternative -- there were specific places where you could stand, and these places both had railings to lean on and great views of the ice.
