At no point would I ever recommend that anyone ever expect a CPU, especially in this day and age of cheap buy-ups. You're only going to set yourself up for disappointment. I stand by my statement - if you want first, buy first - and I say that as a 1K that gets it the hard way on domestic discount economy tickets.
Disagree with your first paragraph. So if United decides to charge you for bags or a SDC, for examples, you would be okay with that since ""United can throw out its own rules for whatever reason"? You even admit that the rules/process weren't properly followed.

Totally agree with your second paragraph (as a GS who have missed them).
