Out of LHR a meal will be provided as our caterer has top up trucks located at the airport to do last minute top ups.
At an outstation it depends when you upgrade. If it is done up to an hour prior to the the flight leaving LHR, food could be put onboard for the return sector but if you upgrade after the outbound sector has finalised or taken off, then it won't be possible to provide you with a meal.
Ground staff should only accept upgrade requests if there is catering or if the customer is happy to have no catering. It is the same for last minute ticket purchases or last minute transfers to earlier flights, we can't provide catering if these changes happen after the aircraft is on its way for obvious reasons.
We don't generally over-cater any flights unless it is a destination that has a high number of last minute purchases and in these cases a Station Manager can request extra catering but obviously he does need to be sure it will be needed.
