This has been my experience. I always now carry my passport w/me to/from Canada. I was actually shocked when trying to cross the border for the first time post 9.11 that I was "hassled" for "only" having a DL. After mucho questioning I was let back into the US w/a stern warning that my DL would not be accepted next time. While I find this hard to believe, I have not tested it.
