There are some who confuse being loyal to the reward programme with being loyal to the airline. Usually when it suits them to do so.

There are also some who confuse loyalty with value.
For several years I was gold with BA, mainly due to a monthly commute to South Africa then a weekly commute into Europe. Since travel pattern was predictable I always booked in advance with the lowest fares and whilst at the time I was loyal to BA I certainly wouldn't have considered myself a high value customer.
To this day I still think BA would be better off focusing on people who are genuinely high value rather than those who travel a lot.
