Yeah, Delta needs to reissue the originally purchased coach fare into business (OP) for the upgrade cert. You can tell if this was done by looking at your receipt online. If it still shows your coach fare, then it is not reissued and you won't be able to check in.

You can't go by just what the itinerary display shows in your account.
