Marysunshine, well, I have to admit that I seldom book with the cruise line. One of the best tours I ever did in port was in Molde Norway. As I left the ship, an older man was standing very quietly by a small sign that said 'boat tour to fisherman's island'. Turned out it was his boat and his favorite place to fish! Not only did I avoid the bus thing, but I had a very nice visit, lunch and sightseeing. We finished the tour off with ice creams.
