I wouldn't think someone on UA would have a good chance of an upgrade to/from South Africa unless they're GS or possibly a 1K flying on low business demand days of thee week.
Even a GS or 1K would not have a realistic chance of upgrade on that routing. YYZ-FRA/MUC flights are full of HONs and SENs, and there are tones of *A anyway, with the hoards of AC E/SE so UA *G would be part of a large pool. HONs and especially SENs probably outnumber non-status pax on the LH FRA-South Africa run, so forget that.
