If that's the case, and your in-laws agreed to it without asking for any kind of compensation or refund of fees, then I don't really think you have a leg to stand on to ask for any kind of reimbursement or compensation.
I have had an automatic rebooking from a Minneapolis connection to a Seattle non-stop from Detroit. It came with an upgrade so I didn't complain. This was for a non-status traveling companion and me
