Upgrading cabin category when checking in

I am trying to figure out what to do for our vacation, and with the incredible prices being offered by the cruise lines these days, I am leaning towards spending time on a cruiseship. With the deals available, we will probably going to book a mid priced cabin instead of having to be in steerage.

I have heard that you can upgrade your cabin when you are checking in if there is a cabin available in the higher category. Is this true? Is it possible to upgrade the category of cabin when we are checking in on the ship? Is the upgrade cost the same price difference to upgrage the same as if we booked the upgrade cabin in the first place? Is there a price advantage to trying to upgrade at the dock?

Also, is there any benefit for being a repeat customer? I have sailed with this cruise line previously.

Thanks for the help.
