Also, many/most Fairmonts seem to participate in FHR or Virtuoso. Given this, does elite status (at whatever level, but not the three night special deals for AC elites) with Fairmont make much difference or is it even necessary for good treatment and good benefits? Are the FHR/Virtuoso rates so much higher that going through these programs isn't a good solution (for free breakfast, room upgrades, late checkout, and a property specific amenity in general)?
Prior to getting to Platinum this year, I stayed at various properties at discount rates with no status last year. There was very little difference in how I was treated last year vs this year. The most tangible perks I'm getting as Platinum during my stays aside from upgrades are the Platinum amenity, premium wifi, and the free Fairmont Fit workout gear.

I think the fact that they don't differentiate much between guests and still consistently deliver excellent service is probably the best thing about the Fairmont brand actually. Their dedication to service isn't conditional. Sometimes it's nice to get special treatment, but not if it seems to come at the expense of others.

FHR rates are usually the same as the Daily or Best Available Rate and can provide very good value due to the complimentary night promos. I was just in Vancouver where I stayed at both the Pac Rim and the Waterfront. With the 3rd/4th night free promos, I paid much less than the lowest published rates and got all of the FHR benefits. In addition, the FHR rates are not prepaid and are cancellable.
