Thanks all for the feedback, this is very useful.
I agree that access to the executive lounge is not really worth much in North America with HH, SPG, and Hyatt. Heck, many properties don't even have a lounge, or if they do there is no free booze and food offerings are mediocre. Also, room upgrades are not nothing to write home about in North America. I might want to give Fairmont a shot.
Have any of you stayed at Fairmont hotels in Europe, the Middle East, or Asia? That is generally where I find value in HH, SPG, and Hyatt. The executive lounges are fantastic particularly Asia and Middle East. The room upgrades are generous. The service is excellent. I am not sure I would get more out of Fairmont there than the traditional (larger) hotel chains. Fairmont's non-American properties are few and far between, so I would have to go out of my way to book there, but as mentioned before there are perks I would not get such as free breakfast in the restaurant, and drinks & snacks in the lounge for happy hour.
Regarding upgrades, it is nice to have it confirmed at the time of booking, which is something Fairmont does, and Hyatt as well. While upgrades are not confirmed at time of booking with SPG and Hilton, some properties have a reputation for being great for top tier members and some others not so much. Knowing in advance their upgrade habits helps.
You can always confirm a suite at time of booking for SPG. I forget about Hilton. You just have to use more points to confirm it
SPG hotels in Asia are pretty cool, don't get me wrong. The free breakfasts are awesome. That having been said, at least in N. America, I choose Fairmont every time (with the exceptions of the Royal Dork and the Crappy Hotel Vancouver)
