Has anyone driven cross-country? Specifically from CA to NY tri-state area or general vicinity?

Everyone I know (ok, 2 people) has taken the route that goes from CA thru CO to KS and eastward, but I'm wondering if there are other routes that are interesting. I'm considering CA-TX-GA-and upward.

Any experiences, recommendations, advice, appreciated.
