Well, India is GMT +5:30...
I don't know the history of that, but I'd guess it's a result of wanting to keep the entire country in one time zone and GMT+5 and GMT+6 resulted in some weird sunrise/sunset times at the eastern/western edges. Not something that would be relevant for VZ.
