One of the things I think kids will miss out on most post 9/11 is the opportunity to visit the cockpit in flight.

Has anybody any experience (a trip report) with taking kids to see the cockpit either before or after the flight? Are any exceptions made to allow kids to see the cockpit while in the air?

If I remember correctly from flying FL (AirTran) last year, they had a blurb on something offering cockpit tours before or after the flight for anyone interested. On one flight, the pilot even announced an offer to give the flight plan printout away to anyone who asked for it. May be worth checking out.
