The last time Gold for Life was around many of those that had it (perhaps all, I don't know), retained it when the programme was amended. I've met several of them over the years.
I'd expect them to play around with the qualification requirement before they abolished it entirely - raise the TP threshold, require 4 BA revenue flights per year etc. Also wouldn't be surprised at suggestion above - slightly different when you're acquiring an airline in a rival alliance...
