Yes I have tried this too BUT:
I have seen before that the hotels overbook a lot and I can only guess what they would do to their customers that do not have a US/ Canadian travelagent etc. as a backup.....my trust in MX-hotel-organisations is not very big....

And then I have tried to get some of the hotels to even answer my emails.......
