Yes, just as in the states you can't pre-book, so I did when I got everything done (currencies changed, sim card bought etc) and the app lets you pick the door you're at, and the driver will come to you (I think it was 2/F only). The driver paid the tolls but you are charged for it at the end separately making the total 575 baht for UberX and 1075 baht for black iirc.
It sounds like you haven't experienced Uber back here yet? It is fairly similar (you see the car model, car plate number, have options to contact driver, know the fare estimate...etc), and choosing the gate is just like choosing the pick up spot at any US airport.
