I get real sick of the 'First World Problems' arguement, when we are on a travel website, in a forum dedicated to getting the most out of flying UA, in a thread about upgrades. If it is frivolous for me to complain about CPUs, what does it make it for you to complain about my complaining?
AGs looking into, hell yes. Every other lottery or give away that businesses run they are required to explain the odds- and that is often for trivial amounts of cash, we are talking about hundreds of dollars in transactions and ten of thousands of dollars being spent by individuals based on offers made by the airlines. I think that the airlines should have to report in their annual reports, what the rates are.
On the other side, I can't believe that the airlines don't dollarize the benefits that they give elites. The free bags, the free E+, the upgrades (delta from time of booking), the SDC and awards changes, the cost of the tickets and upgrades made with miles. Dollarize that and show people how much their loyalty is worth to them. With GPUs on international flights, I bet they could show that they give 1Ks more benefits than some spend when near the $12k limit.
The current way things are is totally dysfunctional and that is largely because of the lack of data. That is especially true when things are changing in the market as fast as they are.
