I've rarely been auto-rebooked either. Usually at the first hint of IROPs, I start looking at alternatives online. If a problem seems likely I usually get on the phone (if I'm not already boarded with the door closed) and talk to an agent. They usually can't confirm a change until it officially shows as delayed in their system, but I try to get ahead of the pack if things start to go south.
I'm getting more compulsive about checking the "Track Inbound Flight" link on FlightAware; calling the PM line with "I'm concerned about making the connection" to get protected on a desirable/workable alternative (without giving up my actual booking) has been successful on several occasions
