What are valid (but indrect) reasons for changing a flight?

I'm not looking for "official policy", but rather, what would usually work with an agent.

For example, I'm going to YYC today. Except I'm going to misconnect, so I'll be staying over in YVR.

I have a friend in YVR also going to YYC today, and planned the time to go with me. Not just for the flight, but for hanging out pre- and post-flight.

Would the fact that I'm misconnecting due to a SFO-YVR delay be grounds for him to change?

Are there other situations along these lines (i.e. a valid reason due to AC operations, but indirect) that agents have allowed changes for in the past?
