They do you give an opportunity to change flights for free.
So for on the trip this weekend that I'm still not sure I'm going to take, I booked two one-ways, changed the destination once (so both PNRs changed), and changed the timing on the return another time.

When I don't care about changes, I buy cheaper fares. EYW, for example, has me booking 9-10 PNRs.
The only changes I've done to those are due to schedule changes, so they're also free. If something came up and I really needed to change it, I guess I'd have to eat the $1000. But only if the reason I'm changing is more important than the trip. If not, I'm not changing.
Basically, you determined that your "other thing" was more important than $150. Your call on that.
Tango plus one change is still cheaper than Latitude, as many people have stated.
