I think he's trying to keep the $2500 for his own future travel while the new fare amount is charged to work.
Basically book ticket now at high rate, and then rebook once he knows dates of travel, and pocket the difference.
As for OP, make sure the B is fully changeable and refundable. A lot of times B can be changeable, but either non-refundable or refundable, but minus a large administrative fee. Finally if it's changeable/refundable on the outbound, but the return isn't, then the whole ticket is non-changeable/non-refundable.
