I am planning to take my wife and her mother to Europe later this year. For various reasons we will all require separate itineraries and thus separate reservations.
I could just put all 3 reservations on my CC but somewhere in the small print it says that they could ask see the CC used to make the reservation when you check in. Since my MIL will be flying from a different city than me and my wife, I wouldn't be there when she checks in.
Any thoughts on how to avoid this potential problem? Would the United gift registry be a possible solution?

No one is going to ask to see a credit card when your MIL checks in. Just make sure her reservation name matches her ID.
