This one has come and gone over the last couple of years. In the past I have been able to do this.
More recently I have had to use Qantas.com to select seats for QF flights and AA.com for AA flights. One current example has been a 2 segment AA booking (001- ticketed) with one QF flight segment (number and metal) and one AA flight segment (number and metal).
