How do I find offical / semi-official info on whether a United route is being discontinued?

I booked a non-stop SFO <-> MSY for Fall 2016. United has one non-stop flight a day, but I checked my itinerary a few days ago and it's been changed to a flight with a layover. When I called United they said the non-stop was no longer operating (UA 1880 and 1800). Flightmapper still shows the schedule through November 2016 though.

Why didn't I get a schedule change notification and how would I verify that the agent's statement is correct?
