This happened to me once before. A few days later I got a call from AA: according to the agent it was a bug in the booking system.

I was rebooked, which suited me just fine because the only reason I took the 'illegal' connection was because it was cheaper than the 'legal' ones.

I'd suspect that something similar would have happened to you had you booked the sub-MCT connection.
