Thanks- I've booked the longer connection per your advice.
One thing I am confused about- the shorter connection is shown as an option on the AA website. Since it's below mct and quite risky, why does AA offer it? I'd guess most travelers don't look up mct and assume any routing bookable from AA will be fine.
