They had orders outstanding, which were subsequently deferred and ultimately cancelled but they weren't actively being delivered to NWA at that time. And at that point the A319 had been in active commercial service for more than a full decade, and given NW's notorious reputation for on-board service and condition they maintained the passenger cabins of aircraft most passengers likely wouldn't have considered it particularly "modern" like they would today to say a 787, 737 Boeing Sky Interior or even 777 Boeing Signature Interior.
