If flying ATL-MSP/DTW-NRT, I have had to have my docs checked prior to boarding ATL.
Before I knew this, I once got dinged at the gate, and probably annoyed fellow pax.
Now I take a few minutes prior to the ATL gate to make certain all is in order. Kiosks of course make this real easy.
Have no clue if it still works this way, but simplest to avoid the issue (as minor as it is).
